Researchers from the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) have analyzed 12 years’ worth of statistics with the goal of finding out which products led to the highest number of food-poisoning cases. There were 363 outbreaks of contaminated lettuce that poisoned 13,568 people. The reason of poisonings was E. coli bacteria. It affects both people and animals. In the worst cases, symptoms include dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and eventually kidney failure. It’s especially dangerous for pregnant women, children, elderly people, and those with a weakened immune system.

The 2nd place on the list of dangerous foods goes to eggs. In the last 12 years, there have been 352 contamination outbreaks, resulting in 11,163 individuals falling ill. The bacteria to blame for these poisonings is Salmonella. It can be extremely dangerous particularly for children, the elderly, and people whose immune system is weakened. Never ever eat raw eggs. It’s also a good idea to avoid especially “runny” ones since they could’ve been stored at inappropriate temperatures that allowed the bacteria to multiply before you even bought the carton.
